How does the Baby’s First Year subscription support your baby’s sensory development?

Whatever stage you start your subscription at, you’ll receive a new set of sensory toys and resources every three months, up to and including a box for babies aged 24 months.

Each item is specially selected to build on what your baby has already learned and nurture their brain through the next phase of their development and beyond – this takes all the pressure off you to find age-appropriate toys, because we’ve found them for you!

A downloadable Ways to Play guide accompanies each box to help you get the most out of the toys and resources. It explains which developmental milestones your baby is likely to be working towards at their current age, and how you can use each item in your box to help them get there.

Why do babies aged 3–6 months need sensory stimulation?

Between three and six months of age, your baby is working towards a number of milestones relating to their fine and gross motor skills. They’re starting to think about becoming more mobile, and you may find they enjoy tummy time more as their upper-body strength increases and they practice pushing themselves up on their arms or trying to roll over.

You’ll also notice that your little one is better at focusing on things with their eyes, and the fact they can now see at a greater distance encourages them to reach and grasp at items – usually at anything that takes their fancy (think hair, glasses, jewellery etc!). Their little hands love to be busy exploring different textures and passing objects back and forth, and they may start trying to pick up more than one item at a time.

Your baby will be super interested in their surroundings at this age and much more interactive. They’re finding their voice, mimicking sounds and laughing responsively to stimulation, which makes it a really fun and rewarding age. They’re probably now very keen to play, so it’s a great time to engage in lots of sensory-rich activities to support their development.

What’s in the 3–6 Months sensory-play box?

Our 3–6 Months box is all about giving your baby lots of opportunities to practice their fine and gross motor skills. Textured toys will help them improve their grip and encourage them to hold and explore items to see what they do, while toys that make sounds or change visually are great for introducing the idea of cause and effect (i.e., teaching your baby that if they shake a maraca, it makes a noise).

Engaging in tummy-time activities will help to strengthen the muscles in your little one’s neck, back and shoulders – all of which are crucial for your baby to get moving, rolling, sitting and crawling.

The items you’ll receive in your 3–6 Months box will be hand-picked to support your baby to work towards all these milestones and more. The exact contents of our boxes vary from month to month, but the kind of things you can expect are as follows:

  • Maracas
  • Hand bells
  • Water mats
  • Sensory bottles
  • Rattle balls
  • Textured teething blocks

And, of course, you’ll also get access to our downloadable Ways to Play guide, which is bursting with information on your baby’s development and ideas for using the items in your box in a variety of ways to stimulate their senses.
